Students are expected to attend every class well prepared. Uniform is mandatory, you will be excused only once per session. Uniforms are purple Kurta (tops) with maroon Salwar (bottoms) or Maroon kurta with Cream salwar. A cotton sash/dupatta has to be tied around the waist. Older students (girls) should wear dance practice saris. Secure hair in a braid or ponytail. Use hair pins/hair bands to keep bangs and short hair off the face. Wear a bindi or pottu (the dot on the forehead). No dangling or large jewelry. Bring your dance bag with water bottle, notebook and pen/pencil and remember to take it back! Do not video record any class without prior permission. Frequency of class Classes will be held once a week. Twice a week is offered by invitation only after a certain level. Attendance Our calendar is similar to the school calendar and each term will consist of 10 to 15 classes. Makeup classes are the student's’ responsibility. Classes can be made-up by contacting your classmates or attending a similar class at one of the different locations of VSDA. Contact teachers in advance for long absences (3 classes or more). If allowed to watch a class, please refrain from talking amongst yourselves. Siblings should be kept in control. Practice Practice at least 3 times a week - all the steps and items that the student has learnt. Students record practice sessions, including steps/items practiced, duration of practice and dates in notebook that should be brought to each class. It is strongly recommended that a parent monitors the student’s practice at least once during the week. On failure to adhere to any of the above policies, student will be asked to sit out the class or pay $5 per instance. Assessment Evaluations, corrections and feedback are given to the student every class. If the parent has any special concern, contact the teacher briefly after class or set up an appointment to speak or meet the teacher in person. For older students - formal written evaluation is done both by the parent and the teacher during the midterms. Auditions will be held for older students to be able to participate in performances. Fees Fees will be collected at the beginning of the term. If a class is cancelled for any reason, then it will be rescheduled or the fees will be adjusted during the next term. Fees will not be adjusted for student absences. In addition to the regular class fee, there is an annual $100 performance fee. This fee includes the Annual day participation, two tickets to the Annual day performance by VSPA and two general admission tickets to any one production by VSPA. Costumes and Jewelry: There should be a consistency in the way the students dress for performances (costumes, jewelry and other accessories). Accordingly, basic jewellery sets will be available for purchase for all students. Please check with teachers before buying your own costumes. Costumes will be available through Vishwa Shanthi for group performances either for rent or purchase. School Holidays: The school will be closed for 7 - 8 weeks in summer and 2 weeks in winter. There will be no spring break. School Special Events It is mandatory for students to attend Vishwa Shanthi performances. Vishwa Shanthi brings masters and other dancers periodically to give lecture demonstrations and hold workshops for the benefit of students and other dance lovers in the area. Students will be encouraged to attend these programs for their better understanding of the art form and for the opportunity to interact with professional artists. There will be at least two opportunities for students to perform - on the occasion of Vijayadashami (Oct/Nov) and our Annual Day celebrations. All students, irrespective of their level, will perform for their parents and friends. After reaching a certain level in dance, the students will be encouraged to audition to perform in community programs and other group dances, solo dances, and other opportunities.I have read and acknowledge the VSDA Information and Policies Document Note: It looks like JavaScript is disabled in your browser.
